Activities to Do with Your Child

This is where being a parent can be more fun, and you get to spend quality time with your kids.

Try some of these activities with your kids. I can almost guarantee they'll love 'em, and you just might like them too!

How about trying some science experiments with your kids? They're messy, but fun!

Edible BraceletsMade with jelly bean beads, these tasteful bracelets are more than sweet fashion accessories- they're also a handy treat. To make one, thread a needle with elastic sewing thread. Push the needle through the center of each jelly bean (about 15 of them). Knot together the ends of the elastic, and the bracelet is ready to wear or snack on.

Other edible bracelets include: popcorn, cheerios, etc.

Spread the Luck of the Irish with this Green StampLet's make a homemade shamrock stamp. Use it to decorate paper place mats, coasters, tablecloths, or anything else your little leprechauns wish to dress in green.

Press a heart-shaped cookie cutter into the cut face of a potato halk. With the cutter still in place, use a paring knife to cut the potato from around the heart. Remove the cutter then dip the heart into green acrylic paint and press it onto the paper. Repeat to make two more leaves, then use a paintbrush to add a swish for the stem.

Spring in a Bottle Liven up a windowsill by making this mini greenhouse- a recycled take on a cloche, traditionally used outdoors to protect early plantings.

Cut the top from a 2-liter soda bottle. Find a flowerpot that fits inside the dome. Fill the pot with potting soil, then plant the seeds according to the packet directions. Consider planting herbs that can be transplanted outside when weather is good. Or grass, which grows fast and it fun to trim with scissors. Place the pot in a saucer and poke a craft stick marker. Slip the dome over the pot. Be sure to water when the soil looks dry.

Hard or Soft? What you need: water, bowl, teaspoon, cornstarch.

What you do: Pour a very small amount of water in a bowl. Add a level teaspoon of cornstarch to the bowl and stir. Keep adding a little cornstarch and stirring until the slime slowly runs when you tip the bowl.

Pick up the slime and squeeze it. What happens?

Scientifically: This slime seems like a liquid when it's under pressure, but it becomes firmer when it's squeezed. That's because cornstarch is a polymer, made up of long, chainlike molecules. When you squeeze the slime, the molecules become tangled. That's why the slime stiffens!
